Database Applications

Databases allow you to store and query your data to support you online applications. The Planet offers both free, open-source MySQL, including in our standard Redhat and CentOS server software installations, as well as the commercial version of Microsoft SQL Server software as an optional add-on. The Planet offers the following version of Microsoft SQL Server software:

Workgroup Edition

Workgroup Edition comes with no limits on size or users and provides all the tools you need to manage and optimize a SQL Server in your environment. Workgroup Edition is limited to servers with upto 2 CPUs and upto 3GB of RAM.

Standard Edition

Standard Edition provides the same set of tools and functionality of Workgroup Edition, but includes advanced business intelligence features as well as high availability clustering for mission critical applications. Standard Edition comes with no memory constraints, but is limited to 4 CPUs.

Virtualization

Virtualization maximizes the value of your hosting investment by using your hardware more efficiently. There are two primary types of virtualization technologies that allow a single physical server to operate as multiple virtual servers: hypervisor- and software-container based. Hypervisors virtualize access to the hardware, while containers virtualize operating system access.

The Planet offers either option, so you may select the technology best suited to your requirements: VMWare ESXi, Citrix XenServer and Microsoft Hyper-V, built on hypervisor technology, or Parallels Virtuozzo, based on software-container technology.

Microsoft Hyper-V

Microsoft Windows Server 2008 software with Hyper-V runs multiple instances of the OS on one server as a virtual machine, or runs other Windows and Linux operating systems virtually on your Windows server. The benefit: more efficient use of your hardware, meaning a better return on your hosting investment.

Parallels Virtuozzo

Parallels Virtuozzo Containers are one of the world's leading OS virtualization solutions. Virtuozzo uses a template system to deploy and configure individualVirtual Private Servers (VPS). These templates spawn a single OS or application on the drive and in memory, which minimizes resource utilization and maximizes VPS density on each server.

Citrix XenServer Express Edition

Citrix XenServer Express Edition is a production-ready virtualization platform that enables you to quickly get started with Xen virtualization. The Xen hypervisor is based on paravirtualization technology, and is acknowledged as one of the fastest and most secure virtualization server software products in the industry. XenServer Express is an open source server software product that offers all of the base performance, tools and easy-to-use features of the Enterprise Edition. It runs on the broadest range of standard server hardware and supports dual-socket servers with up to 4GB of RAM that hosts up to four virtual machines.

VMWare ESXi

VMWare ESXi is operating-system independent and features a production-class hypervisor that makes virtualization easy to deploy. It is built on the legacy of VMWare ESX and offers the same functionality and performance, with an enhanced 32MB disk footprint. It supports multiple operating systems, which allows production applications to run at near-native performance. It is the most mature hypervisor product available.
