»Remote KVM Keeps The Planet Spinning -- A Success Story

Overview

KVM over IP provides an unparalleled level of access directly to your dedicated server. It is an ideal solution for anyone who wants direct access to their server, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, without having to go through our hosting facilities. The Planet's KVM over IP solution means that your server is always a mouse-click away through any major web browser.

Thus, KVM (keyboard/video/mouse) over IP is an effective tool for remotely managing servers regardless of their physical location. With BIOS-level access, system administrators can monitor and respond to server issues from virtually anywhere over an Internet connection. For this reason, server management with remote KVM is an important option for our customers.

FAQ

WHAT IS KVM OVER IP?

KVM is an acronym for Keyboard, Video and Mouse. KVM over IP gives you full keyboard and mouse input, and video output, over a secure internet connection. Compared to conventional methods of remote administration, KVM over IP doesn't depend on a software component running on the remote server. This gives you remote interaction with base level BIOS settings and monitoring of the entire booting process before during and after the operating system loads.

WHY DO I NEED KVM OVER IP?

Standard methods of accessing a dedicated server normally require the server to be fully online and functional. KVM over IP gives you out-of-band management that can be used to access your server when it is crashing, in single user mode… anything but fully powered down. We like to say that it gives you access to "everything from the boot screen to the blue screen".

WHAT SERVERS CAN USE THIS KVM OVER IP SERVICE?

This service is available on all servers at The Planet, including those on private racks.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN REMOTE CONSOLE AND KVM OVER IP?

Remote Console uses an out-of-band management switch, or on-board server devices, to redirect the Serial console input and output over an internet based connection to a remote user. However, this service normally requires that the OS has loaded and is functioning correctly. KVM does not depend on the OS, and instead offers BIOS level control.

HOW DO I ORDER KVM OVER IP?

KVM over IP is offered on every server in our Shopping Cart. If you already have a server with us, please log in to Orbit or ServerCommand to order the KVM device as an add-on service.
