Overview

The Planet now offers an on-demand backup solution that combines our world-class data center technologies with R1Soft Continuous Data Protection™ (CDP) for Linux or Windows. This solution is ideal for the administrator looking for automation capabilities beyond NAS or seeking more control over backup deployments than DiskSync can offer.

The Planet's "all-in-one" Dedicated Backup Server hosted solution is available at three pre-configured capacity levels for up to 6 TB of backup capacity. With unlimited R1Soft CDP licensing to backup as many servers as you want, this simple-to-manage, incredibly powerful software allows you to schedule backup down to the minute, while efficiently managing bandwidth and CPU to save time and disk space.

The Planet's Dedicated Backup Server solution gives you our lowest cost-per-Gigabyte backup, which enables you to step up to high-capacity backup at a price you can afford.

Key Benefits

Bare-Metal Disaster Recovery - Restore servers directly from disk-based backup. Unlike traditional backup software, there is no need to first partition your drive and install the operating system.

High Performance - Sector-based backups increase throughput and reduce overhead. Servers can be fully operational with minimal performance impact during backups. These backups typically can be performed at anytime, even on busy servers.

Small Backup Windows - Only changed-disk sectors are copied between backups. Incremental backups can now be completed in only a few minutes.

Open File Backups - Righteous Backup is a total solution including built-in support for backing up open files. NO third party software is required.

Snapshots - Our technology provides consistent point-in-time system-wide backup images.

Near-Continuous Backups - During normal host operation, the R1Soft CDP Agent retains a journal of disk changes. Incremental backups know which sectors on the disk have changed before the backup operation even starts. This eliminates the need for file-by-file or block-by-block comparisons for every backup.

Designed with Resellers in Mind - You can delegate control to different administrators on a server-by-server basis.

Remote Administration - Software can be completely controlled offsite using a Web-based interface.

Compression - Incremental sector-based backups ignore unused portions of the disk and copy only the disk sectors that have changed since the last backup. When used with traditional compression, this reduces backup storage by as much as 90 percent compared with a traditional system-wide, file-by-file backup.

End-to-end strong encryption - Using RSA keys, data is continuously encrypted while in storage and during network transmission. Decryption during a restore is possible only when the encryption key holder enters their pass phrase.

Data Integrity - During backup and restore, data is verified using MD5 checksums.

Technical Overview

With the easy-to-use CDP web interface, you can schedule backups down to the minute, and restore specific files and folders. You can also perform bare metal restores, which provides the functionality of a restore from a specific point-in-time along with a "snapshot" of the backup. With this functionality, you can restore a file prior to a critical error or even restore a complete volume image after a catastrophic hardware failure.

CDP server backup software from R1Soft works at the block level. It bypasses the file system, which allows for maximum efficiency and performance during both backup and restore. By performing the backup at the block level, your backups include all information on the disk, along with partition tables and drive formatting. If you need to restore, you have full data integrity enabled, along with seamless integration of the backed up device upon restore for true disaster recovery.

The R1Soft CDP server is designed for both end-users and resellers. Resellers can leverage the volume and user features, as well as delegated admin authority and quotas to let multiple end-users purchase a defined slice of the dedicated backup server. In the corporate environment, individual workgroups or locations can assign their own users and admins. The key is flexibility. Dedicated Backup Server allows you to back up servers both inside and outside of the The Planet's data centers.

By providing file-by-file restore functionality to your control panel users, this self-managed environment gives you the flexibility to deploy your backups in a way that is right for your business, while being easy to use. Includes dedicated backup as an add-on feature for your dedicated reselling clients or you can also set up a reseller backup program. The Planet's dedicated backup enables you to focus on your business rather than on backup infrastructure.

FAQ

What is CDP?
CDP is an acronym for continuous data protection. It is a backup method that tracks changes as they are being written to the disk and flagged on the next scheduled incremental backup. This means your first backup will consist of all used blocks on your device, and every backup following will include only changed data blocks.

How do I use Bare Metal Recovery?
You can complete a bare metal restore within 20 minutes to one hour. The process involves submitting a ticket to have the live environment CD placed in your server. Our data center technicians then boot into the restore environment, setup networking and prepare the server for the restore. Once this is complete, you can then go into the CDP Server Web interface and choose the recovery point you require. Then you just simply click, and you're on your way to a working system.

How many agents can I use, and how do I install them?
The Planet's dedicated backup service comes with an unlimited agent license. This means that you can back up as many onsite or offsite servers as you require with no additional fees. The only limit is the capacity of your dedicated backup server! You can install the agent software simply by going to http://download.r1soft.com, and downloading and running the appropriate installer. The install program is simple, and the default settings will work in most cases.

What is the difference between NAS, DiskSync and the Dedicated Backup Server?
NAS is storage space you can access over FTP. You must provide the software to backup to NAS or create your own scripts. Our DiskSync product offers a more complete back up solution, with the ability to schedule backups and perform restores in a managed environment. The Planet hosts the storage server and maintains the integrity of the data. With our dedicated backup solution, you become the admin for the entire system. You receive a dedicated server with the R1Soft CDP Server installed, and full root/admin access. You have the ability to manage backups, as well as delegate authority to users and sub-users. You also manage the OS, which allows for true customization for the less- than-cookie-cutter backup needs.

Can I choose a configuration that is different than the Dedicated Backup Servers currently offered?
If the requirements for your deployment are not met by our current dedicated backup offerings, please contact The Planet sales team. Typical requests include using larger drives, more drives, or four drives and a RAID10 configuration. Most of these requests are approved, depending upon your configuration. Give us a call at 866-325-0045 or click here to chat live. We will be able to assist you with a custom backup solution.

What is RAID5, can I select other RAID levels?
RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) is a data storage schema that replicates and or divides data across multiple disks. It is used to maximize performance as well as increase data reliability. RAID 5 stripes data across multiple disks with parity information on each device. With this solution, you are able to lose one drive without a data loss. When the failed drive is replaced, the information on the remaining two drives is used to rebuild the data and parity information for the new drive. This is used in our dedicated backup solution for an extra layer of data protection in case of hard drive failure.

We also offer RAID Level 10 on a custom basis. It requires the addition of a fourth drive, along with less capacity but higher performance than RAID5.
